HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
Welcome to the first of December’s newsletters and it’s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner! It’s also pantomime season and I am really looking forward to seeing some of our young people in the performance of Hansel & Gretel next Thursday at the Brunton.
I hope you are looking forward to the festive season but know that it can be a very difficult time of year for some of our families and so we are thinking about how we can offer a little extra support. If you feel you would benefit from a food hamper then please email pupilsupport@musselburghgrammar.elcschool.org.uk in complete confidence by Tuesday 7 December and we’ll get that organised for you.
Key dates:
Monday 6 December: all senior pupils return to timetabled classes as today (Friday 3rd) is the last day of the prelim diet
Friday 17 December: school ends for the Christmas holidays at 12.15
Wednesday 5 January: all pupils and staff return to school
Updated Session Dates
Following approval at the meeting of the Council’s Cabinet committee on 9th November 2021 and subsequent approval from the Scottish Government for an exceptional school closure, an additional day’s leave has been granted to mark the occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Friday 3 June 2022.
A revised school session timetable has been produced and a copy will be posted on the Council website.
Staffing Update
We say farewell and thank you to Dr Iain Embrey who leaves us to take up a Principal Teacher’s post in Highland Council. We wish him every success in this new and exciting chapter of his career.
Dr Embrey’s Principal Teacher of Numeracy is currently advertised with a view to recruitment before the end of term and commencing as soon as possible after the holidays.
There are currently two members of the Maths department absent from school and unlikely to return before Christmas. I understand that there may be some concern about this and would like to reassure parents and carers that all classes are being covered, and every effort is being made to ensure that all have specialist Maths cover as frequently as possible while staff are absent until the vacancy is recruited.
Christmas Market – Saturday 11th December (11 am – 1 pm)

MGS Pathways Site
A new Musselburgh Grammar School Pathways site has been launched to support students in making course choice decisions. This site contains a comprehensive and interactive overview of all curricular areas at Musselburgh Grammar school, with links to My World of Work, SQA information and videos about the different courses offered. ‘Learner Journeys’ from previous students are also shared to help current students to decide on a pathway that suits them. Click on the link below to access the MGS Pathways Site.
School App Launch - January 2022
A new 'School App' is launching in January 2022. This app aims to improve communication between Musselburgh Grammar School and parents and carers. The app is accessible on any device or mobile phone. It will be a convenient way to view and receive important information. More information will follow in the coming weeks on how to access, download and use the app.
Outdoor Learning
We are delighted to inform you that we have been awarded a Local School Nature Grant from Learning through Landscapes. We applied for funding in early November and were recently informed that Musselburgh Grammar School had been successful in what was a competitive application process. The grant provides schools with staff training on Outdoor Learning and £500 worth of Outdoor Learning equipment. This will help to develop and enhance our Outdoor Education provision within the curriculum and the wider community. In addition, we have also secured funding from the local Red House Trust which will be used to purchase equipment and resources for Outdoor Learning. We are really excited about the opportunity to take more of our learning out of the classroom!

A reminder that if pupils are unwell, they need to see Ms Harvey, who will contact parents and register them as leaving school. We need to have a record of who is in the building for fire alarm purposes, and to ensure pupils are safe when going home if unwell

Can all vaccination forms be returned to school by 10th December please. If you do not have a form please see Ms Harvey in sick bay thank you. If you are in prelims, please go and collect your form from your register teacher.
