HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
It’s a bumper edition this week with so many events happening in and around school, and lots to look forward to in the coming weeks such as the Christmas Fayre and Senior Christmas Dance.
Can I remind all pupils, and make all parents aware, that the main front doors are the only doors that can be used to enter the building in the morning at the end of break and the end of lunch- not the fire doors at the back of the school. Thank you, and I wish you all a great weekend- (whatever the weather…)

Key Dates:
Thursday 24 November: Industrial action means that the school is closed to all pupils
Monday 28 November: S4-S6 Prelims begin
Kayla and Rory's Weekly Rundown
Hi guys, welcome back to another one of Rory and Kayla’s weekly rundowns. We hope you have all had a fun week in this horrible weather and have kept yourself busy.
We hope all senior pupils are feeling prepared for their prelims in 2 weeks, extra good luck to all S4s who are experiencing their first prelim (it’s not that scary) .
Some exciting news for all S5 and S6s we can confirm the Snow Ball (Christmas Dance) will take place on Monday the 19th of December. Tickets are free but please register your interest by completing the form on your year group classroom that should come out in the next couple of days.
Last Sunday we both attended the Remembrance Service at the War Memorial in Musselburgh. It was great to lay a wreath on behalf of the school and see so many other organisations coming together to remember.
Have a good weekend and see you all in school next week :)

Prelim Timetable and Information
Please click here to see the prelim timetable for 2022. It has also been posted on year group classrooms. If any pupils do not have access to year group classrooms, please see Ms McCrorie.
Pupils should start creating their own individual timetables from this so they are aware of when their prelims are.
Printed individual timetables will follow on Monday at Assembly during registration, including those pupils who get additional exam arrangements. Miss Chisholm will provide further information and answer pupil questions/ identify her availability for queries.
Please be aware that for some pupils there will be clashes (2 exams at the same time). Do not panic; they should see Miss Chisholm if this is the case.
Pupils do not get study leave during the prelim diet. On the day of an exam they should come only into school only for their exam(s). All other days they should be in classes as normal.
There are a handful of cases where an exam finishes after the end of the school day. Pupils should see Miss Chisholm if this is difficult for transport home.
Prelim Revision
As promised last week you can find some helpful resources to support your young person with their prelim preparation below. If any pupil would like a copy of the templates shown in this resource please pop up to D03 to collect from Mrs Anderson.
Study Support
The Study Support Timetable is below. It can be accessed by students via their year group Google Classroom. If they do not have access to this, please direct them to Ms McCrorie who will add them.
In addition, here is a useful leaflet from the National Parent Forum Scotland: https://www.npfs.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/pointersforparents_E1.pdf
Future Pathway Evening 2022
After a very successful Future Pathway evening in 2019, we wanted to repeat this again this year and we held it on Tuesday 15 November 2022.
The Future Pathway evening was an exciting opportunity to introduce agencies in and around the community, to showcase and promote the fantastic work they do with families and young people.
There were 400 + guests attended on the evening and 80 + exhibitors. The exhibitors had lots of information and handouts for all and there was a fantastic buzz about the school. It was great to see everyone chatting and engaging with exhibitors.
It was a delight to see all the exhibitors, parents, carers, members of the community and not forgetting pupils who attended the Future Pathway evening.
Moreover, it was great to see ex pupils attend the evening proudly promoting and discussing their new jobs with the guests.
A big thank you to all who attended, also to pupils and staff who volunteered to help on the evening and made this evening a roaring success.
Christmas Fayre
Save the Date - Saturday 10 December 2022, 11am - 1pm.
N5 Retail pupils have been busy organising stallholders this week with lots of departments around the school looking for stalls to showcase their talents. S1 and S3 pupils have also been busy making products for their enterprise projects to sell at the Fayre. See photos below!
The Fayre this year is ticketless (so bring the whole family!), we just ask that you come and enjoy the atmosphere, hopefully buy some lovely crafts/products.
Barista pupils will be there, selling a variety of hot drinks and the Free to a Good Home Stall will also be set up for you to help yourself from. If you have any donations you would like to hand in for this please do; clothing accessories and coathangers can all be handed in to Miss Andrew (B31).
Literacy
S1 Active Writing pupils have been exploring a range of text types e.g. description, procedures, recounts and exposition. Last week they were asked to describe ‘something’ and here are the three of the best!
Apple Crumble
The dessert was a crumbly, soft apple crumble. The oats and breadcrumbs were a golden brown colour, and it tasted as if it had come from heaven. The perfectly spherical breadcrumbs that were sprinkled evenly over the top were small and light. Around five slices of apple were hidden beneath the oats and breadcrumbs. The crumble sat in a plastic container, waiting to be eaten.
A Trip to Turkey
During the October break our family visited Turkey. The best part of the trip was the experience of scuba diving. I found it scary at the start having to learn about buoyancy and weightlessness. However I soon began to enjoy the feeling of floating freely in the depths of the sea. We were lucky to explore a shipwreck and see some amazing sea creatures, for example an octopus, a lion fish and some huge sea urchins. I hope to be able to do this again and explore some more of our oceans.

A Titanic Creation
Recently I received a large, 3D Titanic paper puzzle from my uncle for my 12th birthday which I have constructed over the past week or so. It’s been quite a task building it. It was easy at first slotting together the weirdly shaped red and black pieces but then I had to add the small and fiddly LEDs. There were seven of them which all needed weaved throughout the long rigid structure. It took forever but then I was finally done and I could add the chimneys on. That was fun slotting them in right on the top of the puzzle and that was it all done.

In other news, S2 pupils had their last creative writing workshop this Thursday with the Super Power Agency. We’re pleased to announce that, after holding a class vote, pupils have finalised the title of their creative compilation: The Grammar Sagas. What a great title! The group had their author photos taken, took wrote their author bios, shared some extracts and completed some evaluation forms.
S3 pupils also finalised their title - Journey Through Musselburgh: an unofficial local guide. To help their guidebook to fly off the shelves this week pupils came up with some snappy quotes for the book’s blurb. We also took a team photo, ate some biscuits (thank you Claire) and said a big thanks to the Super Power Agency for working with us over the past eight weeks. Claire, Heather, Kevin, Gerald, Lesley and Amanda you’ve been great!
Newhailes Art Project
On Monday 14th November some of our young people were invited to Newhailes in Musselburgh by the National Trust of Scotland to take part in an exciting art project with artist, Tosh O Hara https://www.tragicohara.com/ They were also joined by some young people from Portobello High School.
Tosh, or Tragic as he is known in the art world, has worked with many groups of young people and in teaching them the basics of graffiti art, hopes that a little knowledge about the art will encourage them to to be responsible with spray paint. Tosh has made a video of the day’s workshop and we look forward to seeing it.
The young people were joined by our very own artist at Musselburgh Grammar, Mr Bissett, and the plan was to transform the Hollywood style Newhailes sign using graffiti art. I think you’ll all agree that they did a fabulous job and Mr Bissett said that they were all very engaged in the project. Here is what some of our young people said:
Ross - I learned new skills like what caps to put on the spray can, how to use spray paint. I thought it was really enjoyable and Tosh was really helpful.
Robbie - I liked the whole day, it was really good.
Ryan - It was good, I painted the ladybird.
Grace - It was a really excellent experience and Tosh was really friendly.

Thank you for the support, as we are trying to get as many people to attend to break the record of attendance in Scottish Women's Football once again but also raise the publicity and viewing of women's football as a whole.
Thank you

Barista News
Well done to our three baristas, Caitlin, Amy and Sophie. On Tuesday night, at the Future Pathways Evening, they spent the night serving drinks to their customers and it was a perfect opportunity to showcase their new skills from the barista level 5 course that they are studying at MGS. My first ever mocha tasted sublime! Look out for our young people serving you at future events.
Special Sports Mention
Last weekend S1 brothers Tom and Daniel Barrett competed in the East Lothian and Borders Schools U12s Scottish Schools Swimming time trials. Both bringing home medals for Musselburgh Grammar:
50m Backstroke – Gold
50m Backstroke – Silver
50m Breaststroke – Bronze
On top of this both pupils also were competing in the Lothian’s Graded Meet, where they both made the finals for 100m breaststroke. What a fantastic and busy weekend full of swimming for the boys! A huge well done to Tom and Daniel, we are all so very proud of you!
S3 Life with Languages Careers Event
On Friday all S3 pupils attended the MGS Life with Languages Career Event. This was a fantastic session with 10 representatives from local organisations and companies including universities, the Scottish Government, Edinburgh Zoo, the Police, and many more. The representatives showcased pupils the benefit of learning languages in their own job, and answered all of their burning questions!
All pupils were a credit to the school and asked our guests really insightful questions about where languages can take them in life. Here’s some pictures of the event in action!
