HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
I am aware of media interest in yesterday’s fire incident and East Lothian Council Communications team are responding to all media queries. I can confirm that the pupils responsible have been identified from CCTV images, excluded from school and police are investigating the matter as wilful fire raising. We hope to be able to repair the damage as soon as possible but in the meantime girls will use the toilets available on all floors of the building.
We are saddened by yesterday’s incident but remain focused on the many positives happening in our classrooms and school every day with our young people, as well as the new bright and airy new social spaces for them to use.
Our P7 pupils had another great transition experience in classes this week, which you have perhaps seen on twitter @mgsonline, and we hope they are looking forward to their two day visit in June. Colleagues and I are also looking forward to meeting P7 parents this Tuesday.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend,
Jodie Hannan

Senior Induction Sessions
To launch the start of our combined S4/5/6 senior phase timetable, we are holding Senior Induction sessions for each House group on Monday 6th June and Tuesday 7th June:
Caird House Monday 06.06 periods 4 and 5

Moray House Tuesday 07.06 periods 6 and 7
Senior pupils should attend school at the normal time for Registration and come to the assembly hall at the times noted. These sessions will establish links for senior pupils across the years, work on expectations for the year/s ahead and help to prepare our young people for life in Musselburgh Grammar as senior leaders in learning for our whole student cohort. Information will also be given out about how to apply for senior leadership positions.
We will return to full school uniform for all learners in August but we are asking that all our senior students do their best to come to school in school uniform in June. Please see the school website for an overview of our uniform code.
Youth and Philanthropy Initiative Semi-Finals
This week our third year pupils have been competing for their chance to be in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative Final. During the final on Monday morning one group from each of the eight S3 RME classes will present their case for their local charity to win £3000. Marks will be awarded for passion, creativity, making their case for the £3000 and for explaining how their chosen charity helps a local social issue.
We are very much looking forward to the final on Monday and wish all the winning semi-final teams good luck.
We would also like to thank Ms Coats, Ms Hoffman, Mrs Walker, Ms Hepburn, Mr Michie, Mr Valentine and Ms McCrorie for their support in judging the semi-finals. We are very proud of all of the hard work and effort all of the S3 RME pupils have invested over the last few weeks.

Under 15s Boys Football Team Crowned East Lothian Champions!
On Thursday 26th May, the S3 boys football team triumphed in the ELC trophy final, defeating Ross High School on penalties. The boys battled hard and displayed commendable attitude and desire. An excellent penalty save from Sami Hyvonen, followed up by Jayden Stewart slotting home the winning penalty brought the trophy home to MGS. Rhys Calder was man of the match and everyone should be proud of their efforts. Congratulations, boys!
National Numeracy Day 2022
On the 18th May, students in S1 to S3 participated in National Numeracy Day. Confidence in numeracy is a vital part in contributing to society, however in the UK, 49% of adults have the numeracy level equivalent to a primary school student.
Here at MGS we are constantly striving to improve students’ ability in numeracy. On the 18th, there was a treasure hunt around school where students had to solve numerical problems and then crack the code. Huge congratulations to Ewan S, Alexandre R and Ilyas N in S1 who completed all problems and submitted their answers (prizes are incoming!).
Also, in maths classes students have been asked to design a poster with the best being entered for a National Competition thinking about their future careers and highlighting where numeracy could be involved in that job.
For any parents looking to improve their own numeracy there are available resources here https://www.nationalnumeracy.org.uk/numeracyday/adults

F1 In Schools - Design and Technology Department
Our F1 in Schools Team have worked extremely hard all year to Design, 3D Print and Aerodynamically test their miniature F1 race car. They will submit their Design Folio next month ahead of competing nationally in the new year. A HUGE well done from all of us in Design Technology to the Steamline Team.
RZSS Project and Scottish Languages Employability Awards
I am delighted to share the work that our S3 and S4 pupils have put into languages this year working towards both their Bronze and Silver Scottish Languages Employability Awards. To achieve these awards from Scotland’s National Centre for Languages, pupils need to showcase how the work they are doing in Modern Languages relates to transferable skills that they will use in the world of work.
In November our S3 pupils worked incredibly hard on their Life with Languages projects relating to the ‘Meet the Expert’ careers event. Following this, our S4 Spanish Employability group met once a week to collaborate with Edinburgh Zoo and the Royal Zoological Society for Scotland on a ‘Beyond the Panda’ project. Pupils recorded sound files for the zoo website and created a Spanish game to be used with primary pupils. Here is a snapshot of the first set of pupils to play their game ‘Bienvenidos al zoo de Edimburgo’ (Welcome to Edinburgh Zoo!) This game takes pupils on a tour of Edinburgh Zoo, visiting all of the animals and answering questions about them to get around the board. Their game uses Spanish vocabulary to showcase the animals in Edinburgh Zoo, teaching pupils Spanish while having fun.
As a thank you for all of their hard work, pupils have been invited along to Edinburgh Zoo on 20th June to be awarded their certificates and even meet some of the animals they have been learning about.
