HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
There is lots going on in school just now, not just with exams, but with many projects and events that you can read about in the newsletter. The new timetable is taking shape ready to start on Monday 5 June, and after an intensive few months of evaluating what we have done well this year and what we need to improve, our school improvement plan for 2023-24 is almost finished.
Our Extended Leadership Team are engaging in professional learning about tools for effective planning, and making sure we are all clear and streamlined in what we are working on, and why.
And the teachers who will be teaching the Barista course for the first time next year, after a hugely successful first year of the course, will be practising their coffee making skills at break on Monday! Already something to look forward to on a busy Inset programme.
Best wishes for a lovely weekend.

New Registration Classes
As I am sure you will be aware a number of our S1 and S2 pupils will move to Rosehill High School within the Wallyford Learning Campus on the 16th August 2023.
This will be a significant change to our school community and comprehensive planning is underway to make this transition as smooth as possible for all our young people, whether they move to Rosehill or remain at Musselburgh Grammar School.
As a result of the changing school roll, fewer registration classes and new Pupil Support structure there is a need to re-allocate some pupils’ Pupil Support Leader, and for some pupil’s, their House. Some pupils will be affected by this change while others may not.
Pupils in S1 - S3 were today given a letter outlining their new registration class and who their Pupil Support Leader (Guidance teacher) will be.
Pupils who will be moving to Rosehill High School were also given a letter, indicating which class they will be in.
Pupils in S4 and S5 will be emailed an electronic copy of their letter.
If any parent or carer has any questions or concerns, please email pupilsupport@musselburghgrammar.elcschool.org.uk with the subject line Change of registration class.
Employability Pathway 2023 (Meaningful May)
I am very pleased to attach photos from the Employability Pathway 2023. Once again it was an exciting 3 weeks where we visited numerous employers and invited employers into the school. The purpose of the programme is to introduce pupils to a variety of businesses to give them an insight in different industries.
We were fortunate enough to have employers from the British Army, Royal Navy, Skills Development Scotland, Streeleague, Azillo, Talkmoney, Machina, B&Q, Scottish Prison Services, Career event with live vacancies at Charlotte Square, Recruitment Skills Centre, ex pupil Sandie Begbie (SFT) and not forgetting an introduction to Barista.
The next 2 weeks is work experience, providing the placement has been H&S checked and pupils have all the relevant paperwork they are good to start. Pupils should not attend school as they are not timetabled.
Pupils will return for the new timetable which starts on Monday 5 June.

S3 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh
Congratulations to the 18 pupils in S3 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh pupils who completed their Assessed expedition this week! Starting in East Linton, the three teams navigated footpaths to reach camp just outside North Berwick. On day two they enjoyed another day of sunshine whilst walking along the coastline to complete their expedition in Gullane.
We are looking forward to the teams presenting their expedition Aims in class next week. That will mark the completion of the Bronze Award for ten of our pupils, with the rest just needing to collate final pieces of evidence of the remaining Award sections: Volunteering, Skill and Physical Activity.
This year's participants have really impressed us with their determination, motivation and organisation throughout the year. We are very proud of their achievements.
Thank you to Mr Brown and Ms Ferguson for their invaluable assistance.

Art Exhibition
‘Art = Effort!’
This week we had the pleasure of attending an art exhibition showcasing work from young people who access the Inclusion space at Musselburgh Grammar. We cannot describe how proud we are of the young people and the positive impact of Mr Bissett’s art work has been felt throughout the department. Please pop along and see this work for yourself. It would be lovely for staff, pupils and parents/carers to share the success of our young learners.
UK Maths Challenge
S1 and S2 students completed the UK Maths Challenge last week. The results were published this week with 4 Gold Awards, 12 Silver Awards and 33 Bronze Awards being handed out to our students. Congratulations to Caelan and Ilyas for being ‘Best in the Year’ for S1 and S2 respectively. Both students as well as Astrid scored enough marks to be entered for the next round of the competition: The Junior Kangaroo.
Army Opportunities
The Army would like to come in to talk about the careers they can offer. This is an ideal opportunity to find out more. If you are considering or thinking about this route in the Army or otherwise, please see Ms Hoffman, Rm B16.
Military police officer
The role of the RMP JNCO forms the basis from which all routine Military Provost activity is provided to the Army. Trade training includes police duties and law, including interviewing techniques, basic forensic awareness, driver training and personal safety training with the use of baton and handcuffs. Upon successful completion of trade training soldiers are promoted into the rank of Lance Corporal. The RMP JNCO contributes to the MP role of ‘Police the Force’ through the conduct of Policing and Investigations. Once competent in the investigative role RMP soldiers have the opportunity to specialise in a number of MP capabilities.
Army legal services
The Army Legal Services Branch of the Adjutant General's Corps is a specialist branch of the Army, with just over 100 Officers. As the legal repercussions of the Army's actions continue to increase in importance, it's a vital area of the Army's work. Its responsibilities are extensive, from giving legal advice on international, civil and military law and advising on operational law, the law of armed conflict and rules of engagement to prosecuting in the Court Martial.
Staff and personal support
SPS soldiers are responsible for the Personnel Administration, Accountancy and Financial Management, and Information Management/Information Exploitation to the British Army. Deployed overseas and in the UK on operations, we manage the Army’s most powerful weapon: its personnel.
Lost Property
There are a number of items of lost property. Please check with Ms Harvey if you are missing items. If not claimed before end of summer term, all will be donated to British Heart Foundation.
