Staff
We say farewell and best wishes to Mr Valentine who takes up post as DHT Pupil Support at Rosehill High School on Monday 6 March. I’m sure we will still be seeing a lot of him in MGS as he will be working with us on the smooth transition of S2 and S3 pupils to their new school for August.
We are starting to build our timetable for June and have identified where additional staffing is required. We will therefore be interviewing for Maths, Computing, PE, Guidance and CDT staff over the next few weeks for an August start. Unfortunately, despite recent adverts and interviews for Maths and CDT to commence now, I have not been able to appoint for either post.
SQA Level Changes
As we approach the SQA exam diet for 2023, it is important that we ensure all young people are presented for the correct course and at the correct academic level. Parents of S4/5/6 pupils sitting SQA qualifications received notification of any level changes to their young person’s academic course(s) earlier this week.
As stated in the letter, any parental query regarding these level changes should be received by relevant Principal Teachers by Monday 6th March 2023. No queries can be accepted beyond this date due to fixed SQA deadlines.

Easter Revision 2023
S4/5/6 pupils will be offered an Easter Study Programme during the two weeks of Easter Holidays from Monday 3rd April to Friday 14th April.
Sessions will be organised and taught by MGS teachers in person in the school building. A variety of subjects and levels are offering sessions. The timetable for these sessions is below and can also be accessed via the MGS Student Hub.
These sessions are designed to help support our learners in the lead up to SQA exams and qualifications.
From Monday 6th March pupils who are interested in attending any of the sessions should sign up with their relevant subject teachers.
Any questions please see Miss Chisholm
Kayla and Rory's Weekly Rundown
Welcome back to Kayla and Rory's weekly rundown. We hope our S6s haven't been too tired this week after Dalguise last weekend! It was a fantastic experience for all of our S6s to bond as a year group and a great experience as we head into our last week of school.
We hope all of our senior pupils aren't feeling too stressed as we start the run up to exams! And remember there is support available in school if you need it :)
Dalguise - S6 Residential
S6 had an incredible weekend in Dalguise last weekend. The sun shone, the determination to succeed at all activities was at an all time high and the respect for each other, teachers and PGL staff was incredible.
Where’s Wally, Pirates, Jungle Animals, Shrek, Minions and Army were the themes of each group's fancy dress attire for the Saturday activities. These varied from Abseiling, Tree Climbing, Burn Walking and the return of Ms Watsons foam fight.
Celebrity couples took to the floor before a disco on Saturday night with Batman and Robin taking the 2023 crown. Hannah B and Kane also took the annual Mr and Mrs Dalguise award, well done.
S2 Dynamic Earth Trip (Part 1)
On Thursday 2nd March S2 pupils from 2M2, 2C3, 2G1, 2G3 and SfL visited Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. They have been learning about Earth Forces in their Geography lessons this term and on this trip they got the chance to investigate the possible consequences of a super volcanic eruption in the Explosive Earth workshop. Pupils also toured the main attraction which included travelling back in time to the Big Bang, feeling the ground shake in an earthquake, discovering creatures of the deep oceans, touching an iceberg and having an 3D encounter with a Rhino!
Our S2 pupils displayed excellent engagement and motivation. Thank you to Mr Webster, Miss McCrorie, Mrs Bloomfield, Mrs Lock, Ms Stephenson, Miss Smith and Mr Gilhooley for your help in running the trip.
The second Dynamic Earth trip for pupils in 2M1, 2M3, 2C1, 2C2 and 2G2 is on Tuesday 28th March. See your Geography teacher if you have any questions.

MGS Outward Bound Residential, Loch Eil
On the 6th Feb pupils from Musselburgh Grammar school took part in a week-long trip to Outward Bound Loch Eil Centre near Fort William. The objective was to inspire strength of character, leadership and service to others by placing them in challenging, outdoor-learning based scenarios.
A variety of tasks were embarked on including a ‘jog and dip’ in Loch Eil. Initially there were a few complaints about the temperature of the loch but even the instructors were surprised when everyone went back for a second plunge!
Highlights of the week were the overnight expedition and hike to Inver Mallie bothy and canoeing on Loch Eilt. The pupils had an unforgettable time and some have been personally invited to return for a further course in the summer after really impressing the Outward Bound instructors. Even though the week was really testing, the group surpassed expectations and showed great resilience. Well done all!
Ocean Youth Trust Scotland Seminar
Musselburgh Grammar were invited to OYTS’ Annual Seminar on Saturday 25 February to celebrate the success of the charity and celebrate the partnership working with MGS.
Prior to the evening, a representative came along to video the pupils in the school and this was shown during the evening.
The evening was a formal event and consisted of a sit down meal with 150 people in attendance. We were very honoured to attend as only 2 other schools were invited.
The pupils excelled and were real ambassadors representing MGS on the evening.
A big thank you to the parents who were able to come along on Saturday.
N5 Retailing
N5 Retailing pupils have enjoyed visits from Steve Glencross, Managing Director and Anna Gilfillan, Marketing Manager at Machine Coffee, and Judith Hunter, Partner and Community Liaison Officer at John Lewis. Both visits have given pupils studying Retail a deeper insight into different roles within retailing and the pathways our speakers have taken to have successful careers within the industry.
We look forward to visiting John Lewis in the next couple of weeks and having their Events Coordinator visit us also.
Miss Andrew would like to thank all of our speakers for their time and expertise.
