HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
SQA exams have started very smoothly in school- thanks to all S1-S3 who have been so understanding of the need to be quiet near exam venues.
We hope that Senior pupils are continuing to prepare for their exams to feel as confident as possible- we know it’s not the easiest of times, but the long term gain definitely outweighs the short term pain!
Enjoy your long weekend.

Staffing Update
Welcome to…
Mr Melvin, who joins the PE faculty on Tuesday 2 May on a permanent full time basis.
And to Mrs Coyle who is joining us in Maths next week on a temporary part time basis until the end of the summer term.
Uniform
Please note that all pupils coming into school for exams and immersion and to complete outstanding work must wear school uniform for identification and building security purposes.
And another reminder that crop tops and bra tops are not uniform and not appropriate for school. Pupils coming to school wearing these items will be requested to put on a clean school jumper or shirt for the day.
School Improvement Planning for Session 2023-24
We like to hear the views of as many Parents/Carers and I’m asking for your support in helping us identify the aspects we are doing well at Musselburgh Grammar School and asking for the areas you think we can do better in/ need to focus on next session.
As part of this process we are also keen to have some Parent focus groups to discuss the results and possible solutions to any key areas we need to address. Our school Vision of ‘striving for excellence, caring for all’ includes you and your opinion! It is really important to us at Musselburgh Grammar School that we don’t only collate your views but also use the opportunity to reflect on and take your opinion into consideration when planning our school improvement priorities.
If you could complete this survey (click here) by Friday 5 May we would be very grateful. Your views are very much valued.

Exam Stress
With exams underway plenty of pupils will be feeling the stress and strain. A quick reminder from your Mental Health Youth Workers Emma and Joy that there is a great little podcast you can listen to about exam stress on our Mental Health Health and Wellbeing Info Point:
There is also a page all about Exam Stress in the 12+ section.
Burgh Baristas End of Year Update
In August 2022, Miss Andrew (Business Education Teacher) and Mrs McElhaney (Home Economics Teacher) began a new pupil enterprise within Musselburgh Grammar School called ‘Burgh Baristas’, where pupils took control of a social enterprise where they ran a coffee cart during the school day and at school events. S4-6 pupils served Barista-style beverages to staff at break times and during school events, such as the Christmas Market and Parents Evenings. Due to pupils building an excellent reputation, they provided refreshments for a Police Scotland regional event. A large part of what we aim to do is give back to our local community, so pupils served drinks during an inter-generational event in school, which we hope to do more of in the future. Over the course of year, pupil’s profit was £780, which is an incredible achievement and we could not be prouder of our young people here at Musselburgh Grammar School. We would also like to thank staff and parents for their continued support this year.
None of this would have been possible without the support from Machina, a local coffee roaster who supplied our machine and equipment, whilst providing ongoing training and support for staff. During the last year, Machina has been fully involved in curricular areas across the school, including Design & Technology, Science and Business Education, providing pupils with a holistic overview of the coffee industry. Machina’s ambition is to “help pupils develop a passion and understanding for quality coffee, teach real-world employability skills and help develop a talent base in Scotland that both benefits the local hospitality and coffee industries, challenging stereotypes about careers in hospitality along the way”. We have achieved these aims together as four Burgh Baristas have gained part-time employment in cafes within the local area, through having their Level 5 qualification in Barista Skills. This has widened their opportunities for employment within the hospitality industry.

Employability Pathway 2023
The Employability Pathway is for pupils who are sitting 2 or less National 5s. Meetings were held in school and emails went out to remind pupils. Thank you to those who attended and have completed the paperwork, if your son/daughter is eligible and has not yet completed the necessary paperwork, please see Ms Hoffman, B16.
Please note, if no parental consent has been returned, unfortunately due to H&S, pupils will not be permitted to take part when we are going on events out with the school.
We will publish a weekly timetable of events due to last minute changes. (Slight changes from last week)
All of the events are in school, pupils must enter by the rear door due to examinations
Please appreciate pupils are sitting exams, keep the noise to a minimum
Pupils to meet in the rear social area to be registered
Thank You from the Community
A huge thank you to the kind, polite and compassionate S5 pupil who selflessly offered a member of the public assistance with their heavy shopping and then packed it into her car.
An absolute credit to the school.
