HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
What a wonderfully sunny week at school. All pupils can continue to wear shorts in this weather as long as they are plain black and an appropriate length and style for school. I would also remind all pupils to bring refillable water bottles to school every day.
There has been a lovely buzz in school with the S6 pupils having made new friends and enjoyed lots of new experiences at last weekend’s residential. It was a privilege to spend time with such a lovely group of young people and colleagues.

Key Dates
Friday 15 & Monday 18 September: Holiday weekend
Tuesday 19 September: all pupils and staff return to school
Staff
Most unfortunately we are now short staffed in Modern Languages and unable to fill the post. This means that there will be some changes to the timetable, and Mr Jordan will let pupils and parents/ carers know of these changes this week.
S1 Google Summaries
This week within Digital Enterprise classes, all S1 pupils will be given a link to join their S1 Year Group Classroom.
Each pupil will be asked to complete a Google Form seeking permission for their parents/carers to allow them to receive Google Classroom Summaries - each pupil can opt to allow permission and enter in their parents email(s) so that summaries can be sent. If you are interested in receiving the Summaries it may be a good idea to complete the form either with your child or ensure that they have a copy of your email address to hand when completing the form. We are unable to set the Summaries up without pupil permission.
The summaries give you a regular snapshot of any assessments set/outstanding and homework due/missed on their classrooms. Any issues please contact Mrs Donnelly.

Walk 500 Miles (and 500 more) for Mr Gray
We will be celebrating the life of Mr Gray with a challenge!
During the week beginning 25th September 2023 each House (Caird, Grange & Moray) will attempt to walk, run, cycle, swim 500 miles in their collective House groups. Each pupil will be given the opportunity to complete their miles during registration or PE classes.
In addition, staff and pupils can add their own miles on their commute to school, evening run or morning swim. Pupils can track this using a phone app or via their class teacher during their PE lesson. All miles must be logged on their house google form.
We will tally the miles in school throughout the week and celebrate the achievements on Friday 29th September with a dress down day, where pupils will be invited to spare a donation which will be given to a children’s charity agreed with Mr Gray’s family. Street League have kindly donated a signed Hibernian Football Shirt which will be raffled on the Friday, tickets will be on sale soon and all proceeds will be donated to the chosen charity. There will be a bake sale, live music and other activities to make this a memorable week.
We look forward to all pupils and staff participating in this challenging week in Mr Gray’s memory.
Pupil Voice
This week, some of our Pupil Voice members led assemblies promoting Pupil Voice in MGS. Well done to Eleanor, Maja, Ella and Holly for all their work in preparing and presenting - no easy task!
After much evaluation last session, the PV Team have opted to change our format for the Pupil Voice Council this year, with all register classes being asked to nominate two pupils to attend meetings. This will allow for greater involvement and further diversity at all levels. All of the pupil Senior Leadership Team will be involved in the planning, leading and feedback from these sessions, where break-out groups will discuss both pupil and school nominated agenda items. Nominations to be part of the Council are to be given to register teachers by Monday 11th September.

Mr Devine on Monday
Mrs Lyall on Tuesday (National 5 only)
Mr Harpham on Wednesday
Mrs McKechnie on Thursday
Spanish Club
This week in Spanish Club we made some delicious Alfajores; a biscuit from South America. We also tried some more food from Spain and watched a movie in Spanish. Spanish club is on Thursday lunchtimes in C7 (Mrs Deary’s room). All are welcome!
PE
The PE department would like to congratulate all S2 boys for their amazing effort and participation in the water confidence lessons that have been taking place over the last few weeks. It has been wonderful to see how many of you have taken part and developed your skills to improve your confidence in the water.
S2 girls start their block w/b 18th September.
Across the school we would like to encourage all pupils to continue to bring a full change of PE kit for all PE lessons, this is to encourage full and active participation and to maintain personal hygiene levels.
The Wrap Up, with Charlie & Eva
Welcome to another edition of ‘The Wrap Up, with Charlie & Eva’ and wow, what a week it has been!
Last Friday the S6s had their Dalguise trip, it was certainly one to remember. From foam fights and celebrity couples, it was definitely an enjoyable experience for all. One thing’s for sure is that everyone has at least 10 bruises and an achy leg or 2, however we had a brilliant time on the trip trying new activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, raft building and many more! We also enjoyed the fantastic costumes everyone had put together, some include Mario Characters, Hippies, The Baywatch Crew, 80s Aerobics and lots of other fabulous outfits. Thank you to all the teachers who helped us make this happen!
So, for all the future S6s, this trip is something you definitely do not want to miss out on!
Congratulations to James and Scarlett also for winning the sought after awards of Mr and Mrs Dalguise after absolutely earning it throughout the weekend! As well as Oli Archibald for winning the Matt Gray award, and to James and Eva for coming out on top as the victorious celebrity couple at the disco as their awesome recreation of ‘James and the giant peach’!!!
Also this week we’ve seen Musselburgh Grammar Schools very own bees arrive! The S6s and S3s have already had a blast feeding them and putting them into our very own MGS beehives (one of which being known as ‘Buzzingham Palace’!). This also saw a talk by a paramedic and lecturer about allergies and what to do in the case of an allergic reaction, so you can be assured all our beekeepers are more than prepared for anything!
Get ready everybody because prefect sign up is reopening for one week!! If you regret not becoming a prefect already or think you may be interested you’ll be getting the chance to sign up for prefect again, you may put yourself forward by the end of day on Friday.
Thank you for reading this week’s ‘The Wrap Up with Charlie and Eva’. We wish everyone a restful weekend!!
