HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
It is lovely to be at the end of term with six weeks of rest and hopefully, sun, stretching out ahead of us. The past few weeks have been wonderfully busy and exciting with social events, all of which highlight the importance of getting together and celebrating our sense of family and community.
To all the students at MGS this year,, and remaining with us, thank you for being amazing: we love teaching because of young people like you.
We say a fond farewell to our new S2 and S3 pupils leaving us for Rosehill. We have loved having them here, and are sorry to lose them, but know they are all looking forward to the exciting stage of school life, and how much Rosehill staff are keen to welcome them to their brand new school.
I would also like to say a huge thank you to all my colleagues. It has not been a year without its challenges, and they have been supportive, patient and adaptable throughout, while continuing to go above and beyond for all of our young people. The things that kept us going were the strength of our team, our professional and personal relationships and friendships, and the trust, laughter and compassion that we all need to thrive.
It continues to be a great privilege to be Headteacher of this wonderful school community, and we look forward to the year ahead.
But for now, it’s time to switch off the laptops and alarm clocks, and until August….over and out…
With best wishes to all students, families and colleagues, whatever you are doing, for the happiest and most relaxing of holidays.
Jodie Hannan

Uniform
As we approach the summer holidays, I would like to take this opportunity to share with our parents/carers the uniform policy within the school. We understand that most families will buy uniform over the summer holidays to be ready for our August start and we would like to issue guidance on items that are acceptable within our uniform policy. We will continue to have regular uniform checks when we return in August to ensure that all students maintain a high standard of uniform. Please support our school by purchasing acceptable items of school uniform and encourage your young person to wear them every day.
East Lothian Council operates a scheme to support families with uniform costs. Families in receipt of Income-Based Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support and Income Related Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit will qualify for the scheme.
Should you wish to apply for the scheme, please use the following link on the East Lothian Council website.
We are immensely proud of our students and wearing uniform helps consolidate a sense of school identity and community, as well as security within the building. We are most grateful for your support with this matter.

Farewell
Today marks my last day at MGS. I want to thank the many young people and parents/ carers for their support over the years. I feel privileged to have worked at MGS as teacher, Principal Teacher and this year as Depute Head Teacher. It has been home for almost 20 years and I am going to miss it. There is something quite special about the connections and relationships you build with young people from when they enter the building in S1 - to see them grow, become confident, skillful and future-ready. Teaching genuinely is the best job in the world!
To Moray House you have made my year very special. It has been a pleasure to be your House Head and I look forward to hearing how you are all getting on next year and beyond.
Have a relaxing and well-deserved summer break.

S3 Beekeepers visit the bees!
A few of our S3 beekeepers had the opportunity to get some proper hands-on experience with the honeybees at Newbattle Beekeepers Association. They were shown how to light smokers, perform a hive inspection, identify the queen, how to extract honey and of course, a lovely tasting of fresh honey straight from the hive. We were even treated to pancakes with honey and a topping of pollen!
Mentoring Programme
We are looking to launch a mentoring programme to link local businesses with some of our senior pupils next session. The programme will take place for a 6 week period whereby a business link will mentor a student (approx one hour a week) to provide them with an insight into their sector and provide support/advice to help build up the skills that are required to succeed in today's workplace.
We are looking for volunteers (parents/carers/family members/friends) to mentor across any sector of work (trade, administration, support, finance etc) to inspire our young learners and show them different pathway options that are available to them after school.
If you or someone you know have an interest in taking on a mentoring role as part of our DYW (Developing Young Workforce) initiative or want to find out more about the programme, please get in touch with Mrs Donnelly to discuss (mdonnelly@musselburghgrammar.elcschool.org.uk).
Information for S5 and S6 pupils, parents and carers for August
N5 Retail - Free to a Good Home Stall
As we come into our third year of running this course we are delighted to be taking over the Free to a Good Home Stall. If anyone is having clear outs of clothing that is in good condition we would be grateful for donations.
We are also looking for donations of free standing clothing rails and any mannequins for displaying items of clothing at our events. If anyone has a contact that could supply either of these please contact Miss Andrew in August.
Sports Day
After the disappointment of Friday’s postponement due to the weather, on Monday 26th June all pupils made their way to Pinkie playing fields to take part in the whole school sports event. Pupils took part in a festival of activities which included, welly wanging (chucking a welly as far as you can), golf chip, football skittles, boccia, and target bean bag throw. As well as these activities we had face painting, 7 a side football, an ice cream van, a tuck shop and the music dept with the various school bands provided an excellent soundtrack to the morning. The morning concluded with some excellent 3 legged races, very competitive 100m races across all year groups, and two very entertaining and no less competitive teacher races. Well done to all pupils and staff for making the event a great success.
Special thanks to Lothian Hire for providing the generators for the event and to Simpsons Ice cream van.
