HEAD TEACHER'S NEWSLETTER
And so it is Christmas!
In true MGS style we kept the curricular and extra curricular activities going right up to the very end of term: trips out of school across the the week, practical PE performances for seniors; S5 and S6 pupils had a ball at the Christmas Dance on Tuesday; the talented musicians in the Music department put on their usual wonderful Christmas Concert on Thursday; and S1 and S2 ceilidhed their way to the last bell this afternoon.
It is a pleasure to work with the town’s young people, and my thanks to all my amazing teaching and non teaching colleagues for everything they do for our students.
Wishing you all the merriest of Christmases whatever you are doing and whoever you are spending it with, and that 2025 brings you all you hope for.
See you all in January.
Jodie Hannan

Pay it forward Fund
Last week, we let you know about the launch of the Pupil Opportunities Fund. This initiative reflects the school’s commitment to ensure every student has the chance to access experiences that enhance their education and broaden their horizons. This is now renamed as Pupil Pay it forward and Parents and carers will have the opportunity to contribute to this fund via School Pay which will be live in January/ February 2025.
The fund will support opportunities beyond the classroom, such as school trips, cultural events, and extracurricular activities—experiences that build confidence, inspire ambition, and create lasting memories. For some families, the financial cost of these activities can be a barrier. Through this fund, we aim to bridge that gap and ensure every young person has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of financial circumstances.
We would like to emphasise that contributions to the Pupil pay it forward Fund are entirely voluntary. There is no obligation to donate, and any amount—no matter how small—will make a meaningful difference. Your generosity will go directly toward supporting pupils to access valuable opportunities.
Together, as a school community, we can help every pupil access the full range of experiences Musselburgh Grammar School has to offer.
Thank you for considering a contribution to this Pay it forward fund and for supporting widening opportunities for our pupils.

We wish them all the very best for the future.
Welcome to….
new colleagues joining the team

And Mrs Uysal will take up the temporary part time post in Business Education on Tuesday 7 January.
Ms Lyle, Active Schools Coordinator, starts at MGS on Tuesday 7 January.
Staff change of role
Mr Michie, Teacher of PE, will be spending part of his teaching week in the Nurture and Inclusion department from January - March 2025 to support pupils.
Recruitment
We are recruiting for:
Mrs Tudor, Teacher of Maths, temporary full time year long maternity leave commencing February 2025.
And a permanent full time Pupil Support Worker for the Inclusion and Nurture department.
Both jobs will be advertised in early January.
S6 Study arrangements
From Monday 6 January many of the study classes for S6 pupils and a very small number of S5 pupils will change.
We recognise the importance of encouraging our senior pupils to develop independent study skills, but we need to change the location of these classes to meet the changing needs of the school. These classes will continue to be staffed.
Instead of all study classes being in the Study classroom (A12), a number of study classes will now be dispersed with pupils going to the Library, or Mathematics, or Modern Languages or Humanities or Music or Business Education for their study periods. Some of these pupils already go up to these faculties and the Library instead of coming to A12.
The expectations of not using phones for social purposes, only for learning; not bringing in food; being on time; and focusing on studying will apply regardless of which study area pupils have been allocated to. I must also make it clear that pupils are not to loiter in the canteen instead of being in their study area.
Pupils should sign in to their new study class by using the QR code, and can find which study area they have been relocated to on their Google classroom.
All S5 and S6 parents and carers have been emailed a letter and the details of where pupils will be studying is in the S5 and S6 Google classroom.
Pupil Success
You may remember that Jasmin Notarangelo in S4 won a prestigious Science journalism prize in June and I am delighted to share with you that her article has been published by BBC news.
Edinburgh Christmas Market Trip
On Wednesday, National 5 Retail and S3 Business pupils went to St James’ Quarter and Edinburgh Christmas Markets with Miss Ritchie and Mrs Donnelly.
Pupils had the opportunity to explore the different stalls and shops whilst participating in a fun-filled treasure hunt. Pupils demonstrated lots of teamwork and problem solving as they searched to complete the challenges - well done to Elsie and Rachel for finding all products!
Thank you to everyone who attended, it was an excellent way to finish off the end of term.
S3 Forth Bridges Trip
On Monday S3 Physics and Engineering Science pupils went to the Forth Bridges Education Centre. The day started with an interesting chat about what engineers do in industry and how the three bridges all have different designs.
Afterwards, the pupils took part in an engineering challenge where they had to design a bridge in teams of 10 or 11. The teams had to allocate a project manager, communications manager, quality control officer and a health and safety officer. The pupils really engaged with this and came up with some creative solutions to the problem demonstrating excellent problem solving and teamwork.
Lastly, we braved some challenging weather to have a walk across the Forth Road Bridge which was a really enjoyable end to our day. Thank you to all that attended, you represented the school excellently.
Horse Riding Championships
A massive well done to two of our pupils who competed in the Virtual RDA Championships. Both pupils scored above 65%, a fantastic achievement which warranted respective 3rd and 4th places across the UK.
S3 Fashion & Textiles
Our S3 Fashion and Textiles class have been busy this term creating beautiful Festive Stockings. They are all so proud of their work and I am too, it’s been great fun working with such an incredible bunch! Have a look at their creations
MGS Senior Christmas Dance
On Tuesday, we had our Senior Festive Dance, which was a huge success. The pupils were all so well-mannered, enthusiastic and great to spend the evening with. Every single pupil danced the night away and I think it was the most impressive ceilidh dancing yet!
We would like to say a massive thank you to Mr Dickson, Mr Anderson and Mrs McKay for being the best ceilidh band on the night - it’s so special to have such great live musicians performing for the kids.
All photos from Mrs Walker’s amazing photobooth are accessible on the S5 and S6 Google Classroom.
MGS Christmas Door 2024
As many of you know, we have an annual Christmas Door Decorating competition - with staff and pupils decorating classroom doors, to bring true festive spirit!
The top 3 doors for this year were:
Mrs Lyall’s Door to Narnia
Mrs Orsi’s Merry Madagascar
SfL’s Christmas Tree
SCQF Ambassadors Update
The Ambassadors have been a bit quieter this month due to prelim exams taking priority, but we’ve continued with our planning behind the scenes.
Mrs Neill attended a brilliant SCQF Networking event in November at Holyrood High School where she heard from Graeme Day, Minister for Higher and Further Education, and Pauline Radcliffe, CEO of the SCQF Partnership. Both speakers emphasised the importance of Equity, Mobility and Access when designing school curricula and when schools are planning their offering of courses for pupils. Pupils from Balerno High School and Galashiels Academy also spoke; it was so interesting to hear about what SCQF Ambassadors are doing in other schools.
There were also representatives from several course providers such as Powering Futures and The King’s Trust; Mrs Neill came back with loads of ideas about how to move forward with courses and the Ambassador role at MGS. We have a lot to get on with in the coming months!
The first thing we need to focus on in the new year is speaking to pupils in PSE classes ahead of making their course choices for next year. It’s so important that pupils know which courses are available to them, and what these courses involve, when they make these important decisions. Look out for your SCQF Ambassadors in PSE soon!
Pupil Voice
Our school counsellor Ailsa Hill works with the award winning charity MYPAS to provide in school counselling for young people aged 10 to 18 and their families with issues affecting their health and wellbeing including: mental health, LGBT+ support and drug and alcohol use. In May each year a group of volunteers organise and manage a race (The Bluebell Trail Run) to raise funds to support the work of MYPAS.
On Tuesday, a team of Pupil Voice members helped create medals for MYPAS. The PV team were delighted to help brand 200 medals that will be awarded to participants of the Bluebell Trail Run on Sunday 11th May 2025. This was great fun for everyone involved, we enjoyed team bonding, while helping out a local charity. There will be a Pupil Voice team participating in the run in May around Dalkeith Country Park to support the MYPAS charity. All pupils, staff and parents/carers are welcome to join us.
For more information about the trail run and how the money raised helps the MYPAS charity please follow the link: MYPAS BLUEBELL TRAIL RUN - Home
On Wednesday lunchtime we participated in more team bonding activities; our final organised fun session of the year which was making Christmas Truffles. This was a nice end to an excellent, productive and purposeful term in Pupil Voice. Thanks to Mrs McElhaney in Hospitality for helping to make the Christmas Truffles happen.
We hope you all have a great Christmas and a happy New Year! From Pupil Voice to you 🎄
MGS Christmas Concert
Congrats to all of the musicians involved in the Concert on Thursday night! You put on an incredible show and should be very proud of your hard work!
The music department would like to thank our instrumental instructors, staff helpers, S6 helpers, lighting crew and MC's for helping make the night run as smoothly as it did!
We would also like to thank all of the parents/carers of our pupils for their continuing support! There are so many photos to go through; watch out in the next Newsletter for more photos!!

We are tracking pupils’ attendance carefully throughout the session and more information about our attendance strategy will follow.
