Bayonet Identification
Bayonet Identification
This hilt style was produced during the US Civil War for the confederacy, possibly by Memphis Ordnance Department. The solid brass hilt has wrap around ribs and a bird's beak pommel. Instead of a muzzle ring, there are two rectangular extensions, one on the side of the pommel and the other on the same side of the cross guard, that have openings to except a two lug adaptor fasten to the side of the firearm's barrel. There are two forward swept quillions on the cross guard that terminate into round disk shaped finials. A large latching spring is attached to one side and extends out over the pommel.
