Bird feathers or fish scales? A pattern of scalloped shapes in a row that overlaps the previous row very much like scales on a fish but frequently referred to as a feathered pattern. This pattern was first used on short swords but found its way into the bayonet arena on the Model 1847 Sappers Musketoon Bayonet, currently listed under Hilt Style #1. This pattern was again used by the Confederates on the Fayetteville Armory Saber Bayonet during the US Civil War. Other than a few rare examples, most examples of this hilt type were produced after the US Civil War.
