US Brass Hilted Sword Bayonets
Bayonet Identification
Bayonet Identification
This hilt style was a pre US Civil War production and was probably copied from bayonets that were being produced in Europe in the 1850's. The large brass finial was probably an attempt to copy the much narrower European cock's comb final but the Europeans used steel to make their crossguards and finials. The all brass US made crossguards required a heavier constructed finial to avoid breakage.
Other than a few very rare bayonets, these bayonets were produced by the US Arsenal in Harpers Ferry in the 1854 to 1861 time frame.
