92 - Nummulites

English

Hello friends, Welcome to the Fossil Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur.

My name is Nummulite. I am a fossil. I have a flattened, disc-like shape, resembling a small coin or lens. My structure features numerous chambers arranged in a spiral or concentric pattern within my discoid shell. You'll notice intricate ornamentation on my surface, including radial ridges or fine granular textures. Like my fellow foraminifera fossils, I'm composed of calcium carbonate, which makes me relatively resistant to decomposition. I can vary significantly in size, ranging from a few millimeters to several centimeters in diameter, depending on my species. You'll often find me in marine sedimentary rock formations, especially in limestone deposits, providing valuable insights into ancient marine environments and geological history. I'm important for palaeontologists studying the evolution and paleo biology of foraminifera, as well as for reconstructing past marine ecosystems and environmental conditions.
