Hello friends, Welcome to the Rock Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur. I am ferruginous sandstone, a type of sedimentary rock characterized by my reddish-brown coloration, which is attributed due to the presence of iron oxides, particularly hematite, goethite, or limonite. I am formed through the accumulation and lithification of sand-sized particles in sedimentary environments. My defining feature is the presence of iron oxide minerals, imparting the characteristic reddish-brown color. These iron oxides often occur as coatings on sand grains or as cementing agents within me. Quartz is typically the dominant mineral, constituting the majority of the sand-sized grains. It contributes to my hardness and resistance to weathering. Feldspar and mica may also be present in smaller quantities, depending on the specific geological conditions of my formation. I commonly occur in terrestrial environments such as riverbeds, floodplains, and desert regions where iron-rich sediments accumulate over time. I have been historically used as a building material for construction projects, including walls, facades, and decorative elements. Artists and sculptors use me for creating various art pieces and sculptures due to my work-ability. Thank you for visiting.
