Hello friends,
Welcome to the Mineral Repository at the department of geology, Shivaji science college, Nagpur.
My name is amethyst I am a member of the famous quartz family with chemical composition SiO2. I am the purple variety of quartz born deep within the earth’s crust. I emerge with my impressive purple hues, a testament to my iron and aluminum content. "I have a three-dimensional network of tetrahedral" where the silicon atoms are in the center and are surrounded by four oxygen atoms located at the vertices of a tetrahedron but due to irradiation that is due to impurities of iron and other transition metals the Fe3+ ions of iron replace with the Si ion of silicon in the lattice to lose an electron and form FeO4 color center, which results in my purple color and a complex crystal lattice. My name is derived from the Greek word amethystos, which means “not intoxicated,” it expresses that the ancient folks believed that I amethyst could protect its owner against drunkenness, interesting isn’t it! I am mostly found in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil where I occur in abundance in large geodes within volcanic rocks. Notable occurrences also include the countries like Uruguay, Ontario, North Carolina, South Korea and southern part of Australia. I am used and cherished for promoting clarity and calmness, weather as an adorning Jewelry or as a stunning crystal, I bring a touch of elegance and serenity wherever I go.
Thank you for visiting.
