Hello friends, Welcome to the Fossil Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur.
I am Physa, belonging to the Kingdom Animalia and the Phylum Mollusca. I possess a distinctive shell, typically conical or cylindrical in shape, spiralling in a counterclockwise direction. My shell is composed of calcium carbonate, offering protection and support to my soft body within. My body features a muscular foot, which I use for locomotion, and a head with sensory organs and a mouth for feeding.
I am primarily an aquatic creature, inhabiting freshwater bodies such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. I am known for my adaptability to various environmental conditions, thriving in both stagnant water and mildly polluted habitats. I can be found distributed across various regions of the world, particularly in North America, Europe, and Asia. My genus has a widespread distribution, indicating a long history of existence spanning millions of years. I have been discovered in sedimentary rock formations dating back to the Cenozoic era, particularly the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. Some fossils even trace back to the late Paleogene period.
Thank you for visiting.
