Hello friends, Welcome to the Rock Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur.
I am mica schist, a type of foliated metamorphic rock. You can recognize me by my distinctive appearance as I often have a shiny, glittery surface thanks to the abundance of mica minerals in my composition, particularly biotite and muscovite. These minerals give me a unique charm and make me stand out among other rocks. My texture is quite special too. I'm foliated, which means I have visible layers or bands of minerals aligned parallel to each other. These layers are formed during the metamorphic process when the intense heat and pressure cause the original minerals in the parent rock, like shale or mudstone, to reorganize and recrystallize into new patterns. You will often find me in shades of silver-grey to black, sometimes with streaks of white quartz running through me. My appearance can vary depending on the specific minerals present and the conditions under which I form. In terms of uses, I'm quite versatile. I'm often used in construction and landscaping projects. You might see me adorning buildings as decorative facing stone or adding a touch of elegance to countertops and flooring. I hold valuable insights into the geological history of the Earth. Geologists study me to learn about the processes of regional metamorphism and the tectonic forces that have shaped the planet over millions of years. Thank you for visiting.
