Hello friends, Welcome to the Rock  Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur

I am bituminous,an Organo-Sedimentary rock, also known as bitumen or asphalt. I am a black, viscous, and sticky material derived from crude oil. I consist of a complex mixture of organic substances, primarily hydrocarbons, with traces of sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds.  My viscosity varies depending on temperature; I become more fluid when heated and solidify as I cool. This property makes me suitable for various applications, including road construction and waterproofing. I possess excellent waterproofing properties, making me ideal for sealing and protecting surfaces from water penetration. I have strong adhesive properties, allowing me to bond well with various materials such as aggregates, concrete, and metal. I am durable and resistant to weathering, providing long-lasting performance in various applications. I undergo significant changes in properties with temperature fluctuations, making it crucial to consider temperature conditions during application and use. I am rich in bituminous resources, with significant occurrences found in various regions across India. Some notable locations for my deposits in India include: The state of Assam in northeastern India has substantial reserves of bituminous resources, particularly in the areas around Digboi and Naharkatiya. I provide flexibility, durability, and weather resistance to road surfaces, enhancing their longevity and performance. My coatings and membranes are extensively used for waterproofing structures such as roofs, foundations, and basements. I create a protective barrier against water infiltration, preventing damage and corrosion.
