13 - Gabbro
English
Hello friends, Welcome to the Rock Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur.
I am Gabbro, a coarse-grained, dark-colored, intrusive igneous rock. I am usually black to dark green, due to my mineral composition predominantly consisting of plagioclase and augite. Among igneous rocks, I am quite abundant, particularly in the depths of the oceanic crust.
My structure is primarily built from calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar, often labradorite or bytownite, alongside pyroxenes, typically augite. Occasionally, traces of olivine might be found within me. These minerals come together to give me my distinctive coloration, with a possible sprinkling of light-colored mineral grains interspersed throughout.
Unlike some of my igneous counterparts, I contain minimal amounts of quartz. Instead, my composition primarily revolves around plagioclase and pyroxenes, defining my dark, robust appearance. In the construction industry, I serve a multitude of purposes. From providing sturdy crushed stone base materials at construction sites to polished stone countertops and floor tiles, I am a versatile resource. My durability and resistance to wear make me an ideal candidate for various construction applications.
