Hello friends, Welcome to the Fossil Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur. I am Ptilophyllum. I am a plant fossil. My leaves are fern-like and pinnately compound, meaning they are divided into leaflets arranged along a central axis. My leaflets are typically elongated and lanceolate, resembling the leaves of modern ferns. The veins in my leaflets branch from the central axis and extend toward the margins, creating a characteristic venation pattern. I likely produce reproductive structures, such as spores or sporangia, on specialized fertile fronds or leaflets. I am a terrestrial plant that likely inhabited a variety of environments, including wetlands, forests, and riparian zones. Fossils of me have been found in various parts of the world, including Europe, North America, and Asia, indicating a wide geographic distribution during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. My kind and other fern-like plants played important roles in ancient ecosystems as primary producers, providing habitat and food for various organisms. I represent an important stage in the evolutionary history of ferns and seed plants, offering insights into the diversification and adaptation of plant life during the Mesozoic era. Thank you for visiting.
