76 - Galena

English

Hello friends, Welcome to the Mineral Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur.

I am Galena, an ore mineral composed of lead sulphide, I exhibit lead grey colour and shiny, metallic lustre. I have cubic shaped crystals and show a perfect cleavage in three directions at right angles, yielding smooth, flat surfaces. I am very heavy mineral due to my high density. I generally occur with minerals like cerussite and anglesite and I am also found alongside silver deposits.  I am primarily used as a source of lead metal. I am also used as a pigment in cosmetics. In India my deposits are found in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Meghalaya, Orissa , Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Thank you for visiting.
