15 - Conglomerate

English

Hello friends, Welcome to the Rock Repository at the Department of Geology, Shivaji Science College, Nagpur. I am Conglomerate, a clastic sedimentary rock located in the Dongargarh Supergroup in Central India. I'm composed of a substantial fraction of rounded to sub angular gravel-size clasts in a smaller, fine-grained matrix of sediments. Although I typically contain a matrix of finer-grained sediments, such as sand, silt, or clay, which fills the interstices between the clasts. I form through the consolidation and lithification of gravel. The clasts and matrix are typically cemented by calcium carbonate, iron oxide, silica, or hardened clay. I am named and classified by the amount and type of matrix present, the composition of gravel-size clasts I contain, and the size range of gravel-size clasts present. My two common types are Oligomictic and Polymictic. I form in an aquatic environment, usually a river or coastline, where strong currents help to form rounded particles as well as fine matrix particles. I am a durable material used in road construction, railroad ballast, and concrete aggregate. My unique texture and color make me a popular choice for garden pathways, retaining walls, and ornamental features. When polished, I become a rustic yet refined facing stone for building exteriors. Thank you for visiting.
