William Dwyer

William Dwyer

Article by Alan Trout

Born around 1874, William Dwyer managed just three wins over jumps during the first four years of the 20th century, before riding eleven in 1904, ending his career the following year with a total of eighteen victories.

He began riding on the Flat in 1899 but, having by then already ridden over jumps, he was not entitled to claim an apprentice allowance. His first ride was an unplaced effort on a horse with the unattractive name of Muggins in the Second Welter Handicap at Newmarket on May 9, 1899. He held a Flat licence for just one more year, by which time he had already ridden his first winner over jumps, that success coming at Lingfield Park on March 16, 1900 when Deesartagh took the Rowfant Hurdle Plate by four lengths.

More than a year passed before William’s second victory, but later in 1901 he did have the chance to tackle the formidable Liverpool fences, when partnering Dead Level in the Grand Sefton Chase. It was the nine-year-old’s first race since March 1900 and, like ten others in the field of seventeen, Dead Level failed to complete the course.

William added just one more win before the start of what might have been his breakthrough year in 1904. His eleven wins that year included three each on John M.P. and Entremetteur, but quite often he lost winning rides to the reigning champion jockey, Percy Woodland. After recording four wins in 1905, the last of them on Piet in the Ogwell Chase at Newton Abbot on May11, William did not take out a licence for the 1906 season.
