Edward Arthur Edwards – he rode as ‘A. Edwards’ – was born on May 26, 1862 at Witton Park in Durham, the son of an iron shingler.

Nicknamed ‘Yorky’, he was apprenticed to Tom Jennings Junior. He gained his biggest success on Crafton in the 1886 Stewards Cup at Goodwood.

He was reported as being seriously ill in April 1938. However, he survived for a further nine years, dying in Newmarket in 1947, aged 85, surviving his wife of 57 years by three years.
