Peter Duggins

Peter Harry Duggins, born on 3 May, 1946, was a freelance jockey who rode his first winner when bringing Dream of Olwen (9-1) home by a length at Ayr on 12 June 1965. He was originally booked to ride Jack Yeomans' Como Fair but switched to E. Crooks's Horse when Como Fair was announced as a non-runner.

It was for Jack Yeomans that Peter served his five year apprenticeship but hopes of a career on the flat soon faded as his weight increased, and he switched to National Hunt racing.

Still claiming a 5 lb. allowance (which reflected his modest success), he had his last ride as a jockey at Leicester on Thursday, 23 March, 1978 on Caissa Ira for Jim Colston.

That May, switching to training, he sent out his first runner when Sunny Climes, ridden by R Linley, contested the Dartmoor Hurdle at Devon & Exeter.

Peter, having sent out his last runner (the Richard Dunwoody-ridden Scale The Heights, on 16 December, 1986) then retired from racing to concentrate on his two hobbies, fishing and shooting.

Peter lived at 'Woodlands', Dinmore Hall, Near Leominster, Hereford.
