Chris Dennis

National Hunt jockey Christopher Peter Dennis was born on June 26, 1968. He served his apprenticeship with Gordon W. Richards and was only 16 when riding his first winner on Luxury, Joe Carr’s final runner as a trainer, in a conditional jockeys’ novices’ hurdle on the last day of the season at Market Rasen on June 1, 1985.

Chris rode the first-ever winner over jumps at Edinburgh (now Musselburgh), a horse named Tot in the 100 Pipers Handicap Hurdle on January 5, 1987. He won eight times on Chris Bell’s chaser Prince Metternich, including the Gordon Foster Handicap Chase at Wetherby and Newcastle’s John Eustace Smith Trophy.

Chris rode 11 winners in the 1987/88 campaign but otherwise struggled to achieve double figures. He rode his final winner on Jubilata for Richmond trainer Martyn Wane in a Carlisle selling handicap hurdle on December 30, 1993. He retired at the following season, aged 26, citing lack of opportunities.

He is now employed by the British Horseracing Authority as Northern Inspector of Courses.
