Brett Doyle

Brett Doyle rode a total of 479 winners in Britain. However, he was very much a modern-day international jockey and enjoyed considerable success overseas during a 30-year career, winning races in 20 countries with Group 1 races in six.

Brett was born in Newmarket on August 30, 1972. He served his apprenticeship with Clive Brittain and rode his first winner on 12-1 chance Quiet Achiever, trained by Brittain, in the Whitelane Apprentice Series Handicap Final at Pontefract on October 9, 1989.

He first sprang to prominence in 1991 when riding 19 winners from 235 mounts. They included his first big race success, guiding the David Elsworth-trained Sarcita to victory in the Ayr Gold Cup while still claiming 5lb.

After completing his apprenticeship, he continued to ride for Clive Brittain and enjoyed several big race triumphs for him between 1995 and 1997 in Britain, Italy and Germany. They included his most important British success on Sayyedati in the 1995 Sussex Stakes, along with the 1997 German and Italian 2,000 Guineas on Air Express.

Numerically, his best years were 1995 with 63 wins, 50 in 1996 and 62 in 2001. From then on, he focused mostly on riding abroad. While he managed 36 winners in Britain in 2003, 34 in 2006 and 19 in 2007, he subsequently had no more than a dozen domestic winners in a season, his appearances becoming ever more sporadic as he plied his trade overseas.

He rode successfully in Japan at the start of the millennium, winning the 2002 Japanese 2,000 Guineas on No Reason. He then did very well in Hong Kong for 10 years. Among the best horses he rode there was the sprinter Joy And Fun, trained by Danny Cruz. Brett won four big races on him including the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize and the Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai.

He rode 147 winners in Hong Kong across a number of stints. They included 18 winners in the 2010/11 season in which his best partnership was with Thumbs Up, winner of the Group 3 Mission Hills Sha Tin Trophy in October 2010.

His travels took him to more international racing jurisdictions in the 2010s. They included a brief spell at the Selangor Turf Club in Malaysia in 2015 where he won the Goodwill Cup on Polygraph.

That same year found him in Qatar, where he won the Qatar Guineas and the Qatar Gold Sword on Taraf; and also in Bahrain where his victories included the Crown Prince Cup aboard Brightsideoflife. He rode regularly in Bahrain until 2017.

Brett was based in Dubai for the latter part of his career and enjoyed a fruitful association with Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby, for whom he recorded big race victories on First Nation, Devine Image and American Graffiti.

Appleby and Worcestershire trainer Tony Carroll were his principal supporters on British soil. Carroll provided him with the last two wins of his career on Lequinto, who won a seven-furlong handicap at Wolverhampton on September 2, 2020, then followed up over the same course and distance on October 5.

Returning to Dubai later that month, Brett had what has turned out to be his final ride on Nice Future, who finished sixth of nine runners in the Sharjah Handicap at Sharjah on October 31, 2020.
