Andrew Craig Dicks, known as Andy, rode under both codes during the 1980s, ending with a total of ten wins, seven of them on the Flat.

Born on April 12, 1963 he started as an apprentice with Chris Wildman and had his first victory at Leicester on March 29, 1983, when 33/1 outsider Golden Decoy beat Pat Eddery on Jobroke by half a length to land the Keythorpe Maiden Stakes by half a length. The pair recorded a second success when landing the Secret Lemonade Drinker Handicap at Lingfield Park in June.

Having failed to ride a winner in the next two seasons, he started his career over jumps when Indian Sunrise finished tenth of 26 runners in the Grunwick N.H. Flat Race at Warwick on Whit Monday, May 25, 1985. On December 12 of the same year he registered his first victory over jumps when Season’s Delight, trained by Richard Holder, ran on strongly from the last flight to win the Beeches Farm Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Haydock Park.

A final victory over jumps came courtesy of C B M Girl in the Albion Selling Handicap Hurdle at Worcester on October 31, 1987. Sir Crusty became the only horse to give Andy more than one win when squeezing through to take the Electric Handicap at Bath on June 11, 1988 by a short head.

There was then a gap of nearly three years before Andy entered the winner’s enclosure for a final time after Just Ready had led all the way and beat Greenhills Lad by two lengths in the Seaford Selling Handicap at Brighton on May 30, 1991.

Lucky winner Season's Delight took full advantage of the last hurdle fall of Chi Mai, which was well clear at the time.
