Barry William Davies was born on September 12, 1946. He served his apprenticeship with Frenchie Nicholson at Cheltenham and went on to ride a total of 62 winners.
He rode over jumps for trainer Michael Pope and it was on his 10-year-old gelding Starliner that he rode his first winner on in the Manaton Selling Handicap Hurdle at Newton Abbot on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29, 1966.
He rated Tantalum as the best he rode. Barry rode him in his hurdling days, winning three races on him during the 1969/70 season including the valuable Leonard F. Wood Memorial Challenge Trophy Handicap Hurdle at Worcester. When graduating to fences, Tantalum went on to win the Totalisator Champion Chase at Cheltenham and back-to-back of the Worcester Royal Porcelain Chase, ridden by David Nicholson.
Other notable wins for Barry included the Hardy Furnishing Trophy Hurdle and the Ladbroke Hurdle.
After retiring, he ran a horse transport business. He enjoyed fishing, rugby and tennis.
