Charles Thomas Dickens won the 1914 Cesarewitch on Sir Ernest Cassel’s 66-1 outsider Troubadour carrying 6st 9lb, dashing up on the inside at the Bushes and holding off the late challenge of Green Falcon by two lengths.

Dickens pulled off another surprise victory in 1915, winning the Chester Vase on the outsider of four, Esplandian , trained by Joseph Butters at Kremlin House, Newmarket.

He later went to ride in Kenya, where he was champion jockey in 1927 and 1928. His career came to an end in 1941 when he had to have his right hand amputated.

Afterwards he worked for the railway until his right leg was amputated in 1955. He died in 1971.
