Thomas Geraint Davies, older brother of Hywel, was born on February 28, 1950. He served a two-year apprenticeship with A. A. Gilbert before switching to ride over jumps due to weight problems.
His first winner came on Boxing Day, 1969 in the Hound Handicap Hurdle at Wincanton on Sherston. It was a victory gained in the stewards’ room, as Camisado, ridden by Robert Elliott, was first past the post, beating Sherston by a head, but was disqualified for bumping and boring the runner-up.
The highlight of his career was when finishing second on Barona in the 1973 Whitbread Gold Cup, run that year at Newcastle as Sandown Park was undergoing construction of a new stand. He rated Barona as the best he rode.
He achieved his biggest victory on Twigairy in the 1972 the Tom Coulthwaite Chase at Haydock Park.
Tom rode 38 winners before being forced to retire after injuries received in a fall at Kempton in 1974. He became a blacksmith and died of a heart attack in August 2002 aged 52.
