Born in 1878, National Hunt jockey Albert Washington Dean rode one winner in both 1896 and 1897, then added a further 19 between 1901 and 1905. His first success came on October 20, 1896, when partnering Deerstalker, owned by the celebrated Tom Cannon, to win the Nottingham Handicap Chase at that venue. He also had Deerstalker to thank for saving him from a barren 1897, for at Kempton Park on December 2, the gelding won the Hampton Selling Chase by three lengths.

Albert held a licence for much of the next four year but it was not until Kempton Park’s 1901 Christmas meeting that he rode his next winner, followed by a further success the following day. For the next four years he rode the occasional winner, often trained by Tom Cannon. He also had mounts in some of the more important races, finishing unplaced on Bevil in the 1901 Lancashire Chase, and on Gatb Or in the 1902 renewals of the International Hurdle and the Liverpool Hurdle.

His last winner was Little Snip in the United Kingdom Hunters’ Chase at Southwell on May 15, 1905. Numerically, that was his best year with six wins. Following some unsuccessful rides in 1906, he did not renew his licence the following year. He died in 1957.
