Ian Emes

Flat apprentice Ian Emes enjoyed one banner season in 1973 but faded from the scene soon after.

Born on August 27, 1954, Ian was apprenticed to Derek Weeden, who trained at Worlington, near Bury St Edmunds. He rode his first winner on Daruba, trained by Weeden, in the 1m 3f Montrose Handicap at Ayr on May 11, 1973.

He went on to ride a total of 13 winners from 131 mounts that season. They included some decent handicaps such as:

August 8: Yarmouth Summer Handicap on March Malona.

September 1: Ripon Autumn Handicap on Silver Bing.

September 15: Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Handicap (Lanark) on Princehood.

September 18: Yarmouth September Handicap on Feather Duster.

October 6: Crown Decorators’ Apprentice Championship Handicap (Haydock) on Silver Bing. (below)

Ian rounded off the campaign with another success on Silver Bing in an apprentices’ handicap at Haydock on the penultimate day of the season. Almost all of his winners were trained by Derek Weeden, an exception being that of Princehood at Lanark, who was trained by Ken Payne.

All looked set fair for continued success in 1974. Indeed, he struck early with victory on the Derek Weeden-trained Poco Bueno in a three-year-old seller at Haydock on April 10. Nobody could have predicted then that he would ride just one more winner all year from a total of 82 mounts. There were to be no more after that.

Ian took out a National Hunt jockey’s licence for the 1978/79 season, based with trainer Charlie Dingwall, however it was a short-lived comeback and produced no winners.
