George Dockeray

c1789 - 1857

George Dockeray was born in Carshalton circa 1789 and rode Lap-dog, the winner of the 1826 Epsom Derby.

He also won the 1829 Oaks on Green Mantle.

He then turned to training, sending out Lottery to win the first-ever Grand National in 1839. He also trained Jerry (1840), Gaylad (1842) and Miss Mowbray (1852) to win the same race.

After running in, and winning, his last race (Windsor, 8 April 1844), Lottery became George Dockeray's hack.

He ended his days pulling a cart around the backstreets of Neasden.

Lottery had been sent to George in 1839 by a Harrow-based trainer called John Elmore.

Elmore had raced the horse at the central London racecourse Bayswater Hippodrome, and at Finchley and Kensal Green, before deciding that with proper schooling the horse would jump from “Hell to Harrow.”

He died on May 2, 1857, aged 68.
