Chandos de Paravicini

Born on October 17, 1880, Chandos de Paravicini was educated at Harrow, where he excelled at football, cricket and polo. He played against Eton at Lords in 1899, during his final year at Harrow.

He rode in a few steeplechases when he commenced race-riding and, in 1903, rode Isocrates to victory in the Red Coat Race at the Belvoir Hunt fixture and the Quorn Steeplechase at Leicester. He also won that year’s Southdown Open Welter Plate on the Flat at Lewes aboard Innismahiel. Thereafter but confined himself to races on the Flat, amateur riders still being allowed to ride against professional in those days.

He lived at Barkholme Manor in Corby and rarely missed participating at the nearby annual Croxton Park fixture, which comprised four Flat races and two over hurdles. In 1904 he won the Granby Handicap there on Pentonville, a horse he owned himself.

He enjoyed further success that particular year, riding winners at Salisbury’s Bibury Club meeting, Brighton, Lewes and Lingfield. Between 1905 and 1906 he won thirty flat races in Egypt.

Back at his favourite Croxton Park, he won the Private Sweepstakes in 1908 on the curiously-named John Willie Go On. He finished third in races there in 1909 and 1910, Danny Maher riding the winner on the latter occasion.

Chandos de Paravicini died on January 31, 1965, aged 84.
