Jonathan David Davies rode under National Hunt rules for much of the 1980s and had 30 wins. He was fortunate to be associated with the Dickinson family, who had so much success during that decade, but John only rode three winners for Michael and two for Monica.
Born on March 8, 1963, he had his first win on what appears to have been his first ride in public. It was at Sedgefield on February 16, 1982 that he steered Master Seal to victory by eight lengths in the Wolsingham Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2).
Over the next few seasons he rode winners for several other leading northern trainers, including Chris Thornton, Ernie Weymes and Keith Stone. It was on the latter’s Ha’penny Nap that he had the most success with four wins on the hurdler.
In 1986/87 he equalled his best seasonal score of eight, with a final triumph coming at Carlisle on April 18, when Bow Handy Man won the Cummersdale Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle. Although he rode for a couple more seasons there were no more wins.
