Peter Doherty

National Hunt jockey Peter Doherty was the son of Phil Doherty, who trained at Prestbury, near Cheltenham racecourse. He rode for a couple of years in the late 1950s and had ten winners, all of them trained by his father.

He rode his first winner on Kayenne in the Wimbledon Long Distance Handicap Hurdle at Hurst Park (right) on Friday, December 13, 1957. He rode four more winners that season and another five in the next. His last win came on Look in a handicap hurdle at Newton Abbot on May 9, 1959. That being his tenth success, his claim was reduced from 7lb to 5lb.

It may be that rising weight brought an early end to Peter’s career. He had to put up 3lb overweight at 10st 13lb when riding his last winner on Look. He appears to have had his final ride when finishing a close third on Look at Newton Abbot on September 25, 1959.

Phil Doherty’s trainer’s licence was subsequently withdrawn – unjustly as it transpired – when one of his horses, Precipite, was found to have been doped. Although the trainer was not blamed personally, he was found guilty of being in charge of a doped horse and, as the rules stood at that time, received an automatic ban.
