William Dunn

William Dunn was fatally injured when falling from Mr Mytton's colt in the Produce Sweepstakes at Chester on Monday, 6 May 1822.

There were seven runners. The field was sixty yards past the judge's chair on the first circuit when the feet of Sir Watkin's filly caught the heels of the horse immediately in front, causing it to fall. The three then behind fell over her. Dunn was thrown with extreme violence to the ground. Medical assistance was promptly given, but the jockey remained motionless.

William Dunn, said to be a worthy, honest character, died at 6 o'clock the following evening, leaving a widow and five children, all of whom were totally dependent on him.

William Dunn lived with Lord Grosvenor previous to his being engaged by Jack Mytton, in whose service he succeeded Maurice Jones as jockey and trainer at a salary of £200 per annum. His stables were at Delamere Forest in Cheshire.
