Peter Dunn

Article by Alan Trout

Peter Dunn rode two winners over jumps, starting with a four-length victory on Skish, trained by Verley Bewicke, in the Durdar Handicap Hurdle at Carlisle on Easter Monday, April 18, 1960. It was the first time Peter had ridden Skish, who had been aimed higher on his previous outing when unplaced in the Coronation Hurdle at Liverpool’s Grand National meeting, ridden by stable jockey George Milburn.

Peter had to wait until the last day of 1960 for his second win. This came at Catterick Bridge when Half Change, owned by Lord Cadogan and again trained by Bewicke, won the Mother Goose Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) by 12 lengths. Half Change had been kept busy during December, winning at Ayr on 13th, then finishing third, with Peter aboard for the first time, at Sedgefield on Boxing Day.

George Milburn and Peter Dunn shared the rides on Half Change for the remainder of the season, but neither was placed. It was left to Johnny Lehane to win three races on him the following season. Peter did not renew his licence for 1962/63.
