James Dodd

After a short illness, the East Hendred trainer, James Theodore Dodd, died in Wantage, Berkshire, on Tuesday, 1st January 1929. He was 59. He was best known for his prolific winners Scalino and Cratloe.

Before returning to England to take up training, he was the leading jockey in France, where he twice rode the winner of the Group One Prix de la Foret, the first occasion being on Hero in 1885 for his father-in-law. He also won the Grand Prix de Deauville twice, kicking off with Van Dieman in 1897.

In 1890 he finished third on Ivoire in the Prix de Jockey Club and fourth on the same horse in the Grand Prix de Paris.

In the 1890s, James married Lois Flatman, thus becoming a member of the notable Flatman Anglo/French racing dynasty, Lois being the great-niece of the famous Nat Flatman. Her own father, Edward Flatman Jr. (Nat's nephew) was private trainer to Baron de Rothschild at Lamorlaye, Chantilly.

In 1969, James' widow, Lois, died aged 96 in Cambridgeshire.
