Charles Dawson

In 1764, Charles won the Richmond Gold Cup on Silvio. There was no Derby then, and the Richmond Gold Cup was one of the very top prizes. It cannot, however, be deemed a lucky race for Charles – riding the same horse, he had finished second in the race on its previous four runnings. It was a case of fifth time lucky! So pleased was he with his success that he changed the name of his residence in Richmond to Silvio Hall. It was where he died on April 21st, 1791.
