Thomas Dawkins

At 1 a.m., Sunday, 12 September 1875, Newmarket jockey Thomas Dawkins was discovered lying insensible in Shoreditch.

He was taken on a stretcher to the infirmary. Destitute and wearing just rags, Thomas recovered consciousness to state his name and the fact that he had not eaten for four days.

He died, aged 30, from exhaustion and gangrene of the leg the following Wednesday.
