Scottish National Hunt jockey Robert Docherty was associated with James Craig Brown’s Linlithgow stable. He rode just one winner, when 7-1 chance Bonnytoun made practically all the running to land the Streetlam Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Catterick Bridge on Saturday, November 2, 1963, drawing clear on the run-on to beat 33-1 outsider Solon Bay, trained and ridden by Barney Cross, by four lengths, with another 33-1 chance, Red Hat, the mount of Nimrod Wilkinson, half a length further back in third.

Bonnytoun had already won at Perth in September when ridden by John Cuddihy, that Catterick novice hurdle victory being the first time that Robert had ridden him in a race. Although beating 20 rivals, the best the partnership could achieve in six subsequent outings that season was one fourth-place finish at Perth at the end of April 1963.

Robert had a few rides over the next couple of years but without further success. He did not renew his licence after the 1964/65 season.
