Chris Dexter

1956 - 2009

National Hunt jockey Christopher Michael Dexter was born on April 18, 1956. He worked for Josh Gifford in the mid-1970s. He held a licence for four seasons and rode nine winners, all bar one of them trained by Gifford, including useful chasers French Colonist and Manicou Bay.

In fact, Manicou Bay was his very first winner, winning the valuable Manifesto Handicap Chase at Lingfield on February 17, 1973. They followed up under top weight at Wye nine days later. Two days after that, Chris rode his third winner when French Colonist obliged in a three-mile handicap chase at Lingfield.

He made a bright start to the 1973/74 campaign by winning Plumpton’s Evening Argus Challenge Cup Handicap Hurdle in August on Hot Swell. Six months passed before he next visited the winner’s enclosure but he ended the drought with a double at Wye on February 25, 1974. He finished that season with a Whit Monday winner on novice chaser Soviet at Huntingdon.

Chris rode just two winners the following season, Josh Gifford’s novice chaser Half-Holiday at Stratford on February 22, 1975, and hurdler Don Sebastian for Winchcombe trainer John Gilbert at Fontwell three days later. He held a licence the following season but rode no more winners.

Sadly, Chris Dexter died in late May 2009 after a long battle with cancer. He was just 53. His funeral took place at Barham Crematorium in Kent on June 9, 2009.
