John Dodd

John Dodd

John Dodd rode just one winner under National Hunt rules but had the satisfaction of beating some very good jockeys in doing so.

His mount was Canford, trained by Ivor Anthony, and it was only by a short head that he prevailed in the Coronation Handicap Chase at Stratford on May 24, 1952. Runner-up was Easy Winner, ridden by Tommy Cusack, while among the other jockeys taking part in the race were Dick Francis, Michael Scudamore and Tim Brookshaw.

On Whit Monday that year, John finished third on Blakely Grove in the Fred Withington Challenge Cup Handicap Chase at Towcester. Those rides on Canford and Blakely Grove were two of just three mounts he had that season.

Canford was usually partnered by Bob Turnell. However, John had one more opportunity on the 10-year-old that year and almost made it a winning one, when beaten a head at Fontwell Park on October 7.

John Dodd held a licence until the 1953/54 season but rode no more winners.
