George Dickie

George Dickie served his apprenticeship initially with Ron Smyth at Epsom and then with Nelson Guest at Newmarket.

He enjoyed his best season in 1984. While still a 7lb claimer he won three races in little over a fortnight on Graham Fletcher’s sprinter Illicit, scoring at Edinburgh on May 21 and June 4, then completing the hat-trick at Carlisle two days later.

In August he won the Brighton Challenge Cup on Mark Tompkins’ seven-year-old Norfolk Flight. Later that month he won a five-furlong Epsom sprint on Brian Swift’s Barnet Heir. With his claim by now having been reduced to 5lb he won a pair of nurseries at Leicester in September and at Brighton in October on Nelson Guest’s Avec Coeur.

George came out of his time at the end of the year and rode as a professional for the next three seasons, but his winning tallies dropped to just three in 1986 and two in 1987.

Seeking fresh opportunities, he left to ride in Scandinavia, where he enjoyed a fair measure of success. In 1987 he won the Zawawi Cup and the Group 3 Pramms Memorial on Roger Hermes. In Sweden in 1999 he won the Svenskt Derby Trial on Balcansky.
