David Dutton

The son of a soldier, David Dutton was born in Liverpool on May 10, 1957, and became apprenticed firstly to Jeremy Tree at Beckhampton and then to Ray Titterington.

Having become disillusioned with racing in Britain, he tried his luck in Belgium, eventually returning home to resume his career and joining Peter Easterby’s stable at Great Habton.

He rode his first winner on Precipienne for Grimsby trainer John Blundell in a Catterick selling hurdle on November 22, 1980. Although attached to Easterby’s stable, he rode most of the horses trained by Blundell and enjoyed plenty of success.

He scored easily the biggest success of his career when still a claimer, winning the 1982 Scottish Grand National on the Ken Oliver-trained Cockle Strand, holding off the determined late challenge of Jonjo O’Neill on Three To One by half a length.

David had ridden approximately 140 winners when announcing his retirement, aged 32, in 1989 to concentrate on setting up as a trainer on the outskirts of Malton.

David's son, Brian Dutton, was appointed manager and coach for Walsall FC for the 2019/20 season.
