Harry Escott

1856 - 1948

Henry Escott, father of successful jockeys Anthony and William, was born in Hull circa 1856. Though christened Henry, he was always known as ‘Harry’ Escott.

He was apprenticed to William Day and went on to achieve success both as a National Hunt jockey and trainer. As a jockey he won the Lancashire Chase twice, the Grand Sefton, the Stanley Chase and the International Hurdle. He finished second in the 1895 Grand National on Cathal.

As a trainer he saddled three Grand National winners: Lutteur III (1909) and Poethlyn (1918 and 1919), although Poethlyn’s first win was in the ‘War National’ Handicap Chase at Gatwick, where the substitute Grand Nationals were held during World War I.

Harry Escott died on March 23, 1948, aged 91.

His big race winners as a jockey were:

Lancashire Chase twice on Knight of Rhodes (1897) and Uncle Jack (1900)

Grand Sefton Chase on Cloister (1894)

Stanley Chase on Uncle Jack (1900)

Grand International Hurdle on Beware (1892)
