John Dick

John Dick

Apprenticed to Mr Stanley Wootton at Treadwell House House, 12-year-old John, the son of Mr William Dick of Rosevale, near Cowdenveath, and the brother of the well-known jockey Dave Dick, met with a fatal accident while riding at exercise at Epsom on Tuesday morning, September 14, 1915. He was thrown onto his head and, despite a trepanning operation, died that evening. Lightweight jockey Dave Dick, who partnered 39 winners that season, rode at Newmarket that afternoon, quite unaware of the accident. At the inquest held at the Epsom Court House on Thursday, September 16, a verdict of ‘Accidental death’ was returned by the Coroner, Mr Gilbert White. Lieut. Stanley Wootton expressed his deep regret to the parents, an expression in which the jury joined. John Dick had been an apprentice for nearly eighteen months.
