Alan Dufton

Alan Dufton

Successful American jump jockey Alan Dufton had a brief working holiday in England in 1962 and ended up with a mount in that year’s Grand National.

He came in for the ride on Eternal for Wrexham-based owner-trainer Lt.-Col. Roderick Fenwick-Palmer when the horse’s intended rider, Johnnie East, was injured in a fall at Sedgefield a week before the race.

Eternal gave Alan a safe ride round on the soft ground, finishing in ninth place behind the twelve-year-old triumvirate of Kilmore (Fred Winter), Wyndburgh (Tommy Barnes) and Mr What (Johnny Lehane).

Alan then returned to America where he won several big races including:

1961: Black House Hurdle – Rotal

1961: Oxmoor Steeplechase – Hurst Park

1962: Iroquois Steeplechase – Navy Fighter

1965: Oxmoor Steeplechase – Candy Man Ed

1967: Iroquois Steeplechase – Appallon
